Conscientious of the intersection between perceptions of current affairs and the news media, I have dedicated my academic career to researching the news and politics. My research explores and analyzes specific case studies and utilizes novel methods of examining the news media.

NETWORK ANALYSIS OF US NEWS MEDIA

 

Abstract: The plurality of news media networks purportedly provides a diverse source of information for audiences to consume. This paper analyzes the coverage of different news organizations to determine the extent to which their agenda setting and framing practices converge.

 

Methodology: By applying social network analysis to online and broadcast coverage of ABC news, CNN, Fox News, NBC News, and Al Jazeera America, this paper focuses on the cohesion of news coverage in the US media market. 

CITIZEN JOURNALISM AND THE MAINSTREAM MEDIA IN THE SYRIAN CIVIL WAR *gnovis publication

 

Abstract: This paper studies the mainstream media's use of citizen journalism throughout the ongoing Syrian civil war to examine the way in which this form of news media sourcing has become obstructive to a comprehensive and accurate coverage of conflict.

 

Methodology: By using The New York Times as a case study, the analysis utilizes handcoding to identify sources from a sample of 85 articles covering three different time periods of the conflict.   

"MYCRISIS SPOTLIGHT" CONCEPTUAL APP

 

Abstract: In this collaborative project, we developed a conceptual app to address the problem of obtaining accurate and real-time information on crises abroad as they unfold. 

 

Methodology: Using insights from the fields of journalism studies and social network analysis, we designed “MyCrisis Spotlight”, a platform that will empower citizen journalists to deliver real-time updates about crises near them, and provide users with up to date information on crises abroad. 

AL JAZEERA AMERICA: IS THERE MORE TO IT?

 

Abstract: Following Al Jazeera America's launch in August 2013, this research paper examines the network's impact on the US news media market and its ability to diversify the country's news agenda.

 

Methodology: Computational linguistics tools, such as Python, Casual Conc, and Network Analysis are used to assess Al Jazeera America's agenda setting and framing practices compared to those of existing US news networks.
